OVERVIEW
Bradford College was awarded £5.8m from The Office for Students Higher Education Capital Fund to transform a derelict building into a state-of-the-art STEM training and education facility for the benefit of students studying digital, science and allied health subjects.
CHALLENGE
It was essential that G&H supported the requirement of Part L of the building regulation and the college’s sustainability commitments. As part of the design process, G&H ensured that the heating system, once installed, could facilitate an additional future boiler if required.
SOLUTION
G&H was appointed to support main contractor Tilbury Douglas, to provide all mechanical and electrical design and build services.
This included installing:
- A heating system which feeds the radiators, heater batteries and the overdoor heater.
- Power supplies for the two Cisco labs.
- Air handling units on level four to heat and cool the event space to ensure it is at an optimum temperature.
- Air conditioning.
- Compressed air and water supply to each desk in the dentistry suite.
- State-of-the-art reception including the speed gate.
- New building management system (BMS) to operate each individual room.
RESULTS
The new state-of-the art mill boasts cutting-edge dental facilities including a specialist dentistry suite, a prep room, six higher education digital IT labs, an ophthalmic dispensing suite, a real-life work environment with consulting and testing booths, a clinical suite, and academic teaching spaces.
Forming part of Bradford College’s ambitious estates strategy, these new facilities will nurture pioneering careers in sectors that support regional economic growth.
