G&H Fabrication speeds up M&E process at UTC2 Sheffield

Specialist off-site fabrication for the new University Technology College 2 (UTC2) in Sheffield halved the time it took to carry out elements of the M&E works.

G&H Fabrication took just two weeks to build, test, deliver and install the majority of the main plant room and plate exchanger instead of four weeks if the work was carried out on site.

UTC2 was built on the Olympic Legacy Park in Don Valley and opened in September teaching Human Sciences and Computing to 600 pupils.

G&H Fabrication carried out the off-site work in its purpose built facility at the Group’s headquarters in Yorkshire after the G&H Group secured the M&E contract with BAM Construction.

G&H Fabrication Manager, James Sherburn, said: “We played an intrinsic role in ensuring the deadline was met by fabricating key components off-site to save time.

“Although significant, off-site fabrication is not just about speeding up the process.

“Fabricating in our sterile, controlled, indoor facility means we are able to increase the productivity and quality while maintaining a safe environment.

“Our engineers can easily access all parts of the plant without the hindrance of walls and structural steelwork, make any adjustments immediately and test again prior to dispatch to site.

“A major advantage for construction companies is that we can spend less time on site so we are freeing up space for other trades and reducing congestion.

“We delivered the pre-manufactured skid to the site when it was needed to minimise disruption and maximise efficiency.”
