OVERVIEW
Kirklees Council’s residential care home, Knowl Park House, was no longer fit-for-purpose. To achieve its vision to replace the care home with a state-of-the-art facility that would enable people living with dementia to live more independently and offer respite for their relatives, Kirklees Council worked collaboratively with the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Design Centre (DSDC).
Tilbury Douglas appointed G&H to deliver an extensive mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) build.
CHALLENGE
Delivering a high-specification, single-storey facility designed to meet rigorous dementia care
standards while incorporating the latest assistive technologies required careful planning and precise execution.
SOLUTION
G&H was appointed by main contractor Tilbury Douglas to provide an extensive mechanical,
electrical and public health (MEP) build. Our scope included:
• Specialist installations such as immersive technology systems, allowing users to engage in stimulating augmented reality experiences (e.g. a virtual bus ride)
• The installation of 160m2 of PV panels to generate 38kWh of electricity.
• Energy efficient LED lighting including feature lighting within the sensory garden.
• Fire alarm, access control system, nurse call system, building management system, sprinklers, ventilation, and plumbing.
• Air source heat pumps.
RESULTS
Since opening its doors, Knowl Park House, with its Home Therapy Zone, Activity Zone including a large arts and crafts room, and Wellbeing Zone featuring the sensory and cinema room and spa, has provided dementia care for up to 30 vulnerable residents per day and given their carers respite.
The facility draws on the latest research and technology to enable people within the community living with dementia to live more independently for longer.
