“We are extremely pleased with the successful delivery of the PSDS scheme at Newsome Academy, which stands as a strong example of what can be achieved through effective partnership. Working collaboratively with Eddisons BTG and G&H, Impact Education Multi Academy Trust has been able to transform an ageing and inefficient heating system into a modern, low-carbon solution that directly supports both our sustainability ambitions and the needs of the school community.

“Throughout the project, all partners demonstrated professionalism, technical expertise, and a shared commitment to achieving the best outcomes for Newsome Academy and Impact Education Multi Academy Trust. The result is a reliable and efficient heating system that enhances the learning environment for students while significantly reducing our carbon footprint. This scheme reflects the strength of collaborative working and our collective focus on delivering meaningful, long-term improvement across the Impact Education estate.”

PHILL HORSFALL, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AT IMPACT EDUCATION MULTI ACADEMY TRUST

OVERVIEW

In partnership with BTG Eddisons, Impact Education Multi Academy Trust secured funding through the Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme to deliver essential heating upgrades at Newsome Academy in Huddersfield. The school’s existing boiler system was highly inefficient, consuming 636,906kWh of gas energy per year.

Following a competitive tender process, G&H was appointed to decommission and remove the outdated gas boiler system and install three new ASHPs. In addition to pump installation, G&H was responsible for commissioning the new ASHP units and replacing all radiators
throughout the building.

SOLUTION

G&H delivered a full mechanical and electrical package, including:

• Mechanical Installation

Installation of ASHP units within a new external compound. External trenching for
associated service connections. Installation of new mechanical equipment within the plant
room to support the upgraded system.

• Pipework Installation

External pipework installation via trenching. Plant room pipework, including lagging and all
required fittings.

• Electrical Installation

Distribution Network Operator (DNO) upgrade including new substation and annex building. Upgrading of existing electrical infrastructure.

• Building Works

Installation of a concrete base to house the ASHP’s and associated sub station. Installation of hit and miss 3 meter high fencing.

• System Integration

Installation of a completely new building management system (BMS) to optimise control and performance.

• Testing and Commissioning

Comprehensive testing to verify system integrity, performance, and safety. Pressure testing, functional testing, and checks for all control and safety devices.

• Documentation and Handover

Provision of detailed documentation, including testing records and commissioning reports, as well as training for the school and Trust staff so that they have the knowledge and confidence to operate the new system effectively.

RESULTS

Newsome Academy provides exceptional educational facilities for students across Years 7 to 11. In association with Impact Education Multi Academy Trust’s sustainability and Net Zero targets, Newsome Academy now benefits from a reliable, efficient, and low-carbon heating system that supports the Trust’s decarbonisation goals and provides an improved learning environment.
