OVERVIEW

With support from Eddisons, The Avenue School Special Needs Academy Trust secured funding through the Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund to replace the outdated heating and water systems at The Avenue Special School. The objectives were clear: improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, enhance system reliability, and create a comfortable environment for pupils and staff.

Following a competitive tender process, G&H was appointed to deliver the Trust’s Heat Decarbonisation Plan. This included removing the traditional fossil-fuel boilers and installing a modern ASHP solution supported by new domestic hot water infrastructure.

To ensure the school remained fully operational, G&H installed temporary boilers, enabling heating and hot water continuity throughout the project and minimising disruption to teaching and learning.

SOLUTION

G&H delivered a complete M&E package. This included:

• Mechanical Installation – Positioning, securing, and connecting the new ASHP units within a designated external compound. Inside the plant room, new mechanical components were installed, including cylinders, pumps, and a new control panel.

• Pipework Installation – Installing External Low Temperature Hot water (LTHW) pipework, complete with valves, fittings, and insulation to ensure long-term efficiency and system durability.

• System Integration – A new Building Management System (BMS), to deliver seamless integration with existing control and safety mechanisms. This ensures the new plant operates efficiently and can be monitored and controlled with enhanced precision.

• Testing and Commissioning – Comprehensive system testing included pressure testing, performance validation, and full functional testing of all controls and safety devices.

• Documentation and Handover – G&H provided full documentation, including
commissioning reports, test results, operation manuals, and handover packs, as well as training for the school’s staff so that they have the knowledge and confidence to
operate the new system effectively.

RESULTS

With around 250 students and 250 staff, the school now enjoys a reliable, low-carbon heating system that supports net zero goals and creates the ideal environment for learning and better outcomes.
